The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced the final results of the 2024 Python Challenge, a 10-day event designed to raise awareness about the ecological threat posed by invasive species, specifically the Burmese python. Participants, numbering 857 in total, hailed from across the United States and even from Canada, gathering in South Florida to tackle the state's growing python problem.
During the challenge, a total of 195 Burmese pythons were successfully captured and removed from the Florida Everglades, a vital but delicate ecosystem that has been under significant threat due to the rapid spread of these non-native snakes. Burmese pythons, which have no natural predators in Florida, are responsible for the decline of numerous native species, including birds, mammals, and even alligators. The FWC hosted an awards ceremony earlier this week in Duck Key, where the winners were recognized for their contributions.
