As Fantasy Fest kicks off in Key West, local authorities are issuing important reminders to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees. While the annual festival is known for its vibrant costumes and creative expression, certain restrictions will be strictly enforced to maintain public safety and order.
Public Nudity Prohibited
One key reminder is that public nudity is prohibited in Key West, even during Fantasy Fest. While costumes can be wild and daring, they must adhere to the city’s decency laws. Police will be monitoring compliance, so attendees are encouraged to be mindful of these regulations when planning their festival outfits.
Costume Weaponry and Other Restricted Items
If your costume includes any type of weapon, it must be easily identifiable as a fake. Law enforcement officers will be vigilant in checking for items resembling real weapons, and any uncertainty could lead to confiscation or further action.
In addition, laser pointers are strictly banned, and while backpacks and coolers are not forbidden, they are discouraged. If you do choose to bring them, be prepared for law enforcement to request a search of the contents as part of safety protocols.
Fantasy Zone Boundaries and Traffic Advisories
The heart of Fantasy Fest, referred to as the "Fantasy Zone," spans from Lower Duval Street to Truman Avenue, including the cross streets between Whitehead and Simonton Streets. These areas will be under heightened law enforcement presence to ensure safety throughout the festivities.
On Friday, October 25th, one of the festival’s key events, the Masquerade March, will commence at 5:30 p.m. from Frances Street, near the Southernmost Point. It's important to note that the streets along the march route will remain open to traffic, meaning motorists can expect delays. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and consider alternative routes to avoid congestion.
Heavy Law Enforcement Presence
To bolster safety efforts, Key West Police will be joined by numerous other law enforcement agencies. This includes the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Florida Highway Patrol, FBI Miami, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Orange County Sheriff's Office. Additionally, the Florida Mounted Unit and military personnel from NAS Key West will be on hand to assist in maintaining a secure environment.
