The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced the reopening of the recreational harvest season for red grouper and lane snapper in Gulf state waters, effective January 1, 2025.

Anglers targeting red grouper in Gulf state or federal waters from private recreational vessels are reminded to obtain the State Reef Fish Angler Designation, which requires annual renewal. This designation enables anglers to be selected for the State Reef Fish Survey, contributing valuable data to enhance recreational fishing opportunities in Florida. More information about the survey is available on the FWC website.

The red grouper season had been closed since July 1, 2024, to prevent overfishing and ensure the species' sustainability. The reopening on January 1, 2025, aligns with FWC's management strategies to balance conservation efforts with recreational fishing interests.

Anglers are advised to review current regulations for red grouper and lane snapper, including size and bag limits, to ensure compliance. The Fish Rules App is a helpful resource for up-to-date fishing regulations.

By participating in the State Reef Fish Survey, anglers play a crucial role in improving data collection, which supports sustainable fishing practices and the preservation of Florida's marine ecosystems.
